Supreme Court Interferes With Marriage - 106 Years Ago

On this day in 1890, polygamy was officially banned by the Mormon Church. (This announcement followed on the heels of an 1890 Supreme Court ruling denying all privileges of U.S. citizenship to Mormons who practiced this outlawed form of marriage.)

Hmm. Interesting. It would seem there is indeed ample historical and judicial precedent for the state taking an interest in the forms and definitions of marriage. Sort of takes the wind out of the argument for a constitutional right to marry whomever or whatever you desire.
